The timing, plainly

When should nurses start their license renewal?

Well before the printed deadline — give yourself a comfortable cushion, often a couple of months, and confirm the exact requirement with your board of nursing. The renewal itself is quick; the chain behind it isn’t. CE has to be chosen, completed, and actually posted to your record; some cycles add extra requirements; and if you hold licenses in more than one state, each runs on its own clock. The part that makes this different from most renewals: a nurse with a lapsed license can’t legally work the next shift. The deadline isn’t a fee — it’s your schedule.

⏱ The window: A comfortable cushion before your renewal deadline

CE must be completed and posted before the board renews you, and any step — a course, an exam, credit reporting — can run longer than expected. A lapse means no working until it’s resolved.

How many CE hours do nurses need to renew?

It varies by state, license type, and cycle — and boards change requirements between cycles. Your board of nursing’s site is the only reliable source; check it at the start of the cycle, not the end.

I hold a multistate (compact) license — what renews?

Your home state’s renewal is what keeps the multistate privilege alive, and its rules govern. If you also hold single-state licenses elsewhere, each has its own renewal date — idle ones included. Every one of them deserves its own reminder.

What happens if my nursing license lapses?

You can’t practice on it until it’s reinstated, and reinstatement usually means fees and paperwork that grow with the length of the lapse. See our guide on letting a license lapse for how that ladder works.
